"Williamston's oldest active Service Organization."
Forming garden clubs was a natural expression of interest in nature and beauty. Horticultural societies and botany groups, some dating back to colonial times, restricted women’s membership. In response to that restriction, women formed their own clubs within their own communities. On May 1, 1929, 13 federated states became charter members of the National Garden Clubs at an organizational meeting in Washington, DC. The Garden Club of America was founded in 1913. While many started with the goal of exchanging information and cuttings, they soon adopted larger missions, which indelibly shaped the American landscape. The founding of Williamston Red Cedar Garden Club could be considered a “pioneer club” since it was organized in 1925 and federated in 1948. It is the second oldest organization in Williamston, MI. Fifteen current members are state life members of Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. Among the current membership, there are master gardeners, advanced master gardeners, flower show judges, garden consultants, floral designers, Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. officers and national board members. The club’s mission is to promote the love of gardening and to provide education to members and the community on gardening and environmental issues. The goal of the WRCGC is to partner with other organizations within our community that support a healthy and beautiful place to live. The WRCGC Beautification Committee purchases, plants and cares for flowers at the U.S. Post Office; the Depot Museum; the Butterfly Garden, Gazebo, Blue Star Memorial, and restrooms in McCormick Park, and various downtown planters. The club helps to host District IIB meetings and sponsors flower shows. In 2018, the WRCGC assisted in hosting the National Garden Clubs conference held in Grand Rapids, MI. The WRCGC also sponsors the National Garden Club, Inc. Smokey Bear/ Woodsy Owl poster contest for local elementary students. Some local winners have gone on to win state awards and Central Region awards. One of the WRCGC’s community service projects includes creating “Cups of Love”, where the members create miniature arrangements in small Christmas mugs, and then distribute them to local shut-ins and residents of nursing and rehabilitation centers and homes. Another charitable project is the Arbor Day tree sale conducted each year around Arbor Day. Approximately 600 pine tree seedlings are purchased by the club and then sold at a reduced price of 50 cents to local elementary-aged children. This WRCGC subsidized project provides an opportunity to help children understand the value of planting new trees and educate people on the proper placement, |
